Innocence, Where Dwell You?

Alas, proud rebel,
Seditious ingrate;
Ensnared
By lustful flesh
And tempter’s lies.
Think on God,
Benevolent Creator,
Kind Benefactor,
Withholder of nothing–
Save His throne.
What is man
That such goodness
He could lightly prize?
Could forfeit all–
Let posterity be damned.
For “knowledge,”
Sell his soul,
Dominion,
Life itself!
Trade a garden
For a grave?
What a bargain!
Life or death,
Death or life,
The choice was clear.
But Adam sinned
And seed of loin
Consented in him.
Oh, Innocence,
Where dwell you?
Certainly not in men!
For, from Eden onward,
Everyone has sinned.
