Innermost Place

While the deep in me seeks the deep in you,
Searching for the fount of relational truth,
Watching for the walls that so often stand
Between soulful hearts in destiny’s hand,
You playfully splash water in my face.

It moistens my lips, that salty brine,
And leaves a familiar taste behind.
It increases my thirst for unknown depths
And inspires my heart to continue the quest
As a marathon runner must finish the race.

I welcome this shallow but friendly exchange
As a teasing invitation to stay in the game.
The poignant longing of my soul is assuaged
And hope is encouraged that perhaps someday
You’ll open the door to your innermost place.
