Know The Truth

Jesus said, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free” John 8:32. Consider the implications of this statement. You are currently in bondage! Those who are free don’t need to be set free. So, why are you in bondage? Because you don’t know the truth! Why don’t you know the truth? Because you have believed a lie.

Adam and Eve were created in the truth. They had full knowledge of the truth and were in open communication with their Creator. They had true freedom: spiritual, mental, emotional, relational, physical and political freedom! So, what happened to them?

They chose to use their freedom to rebel against the instructions given to them by their Creator, God. They turned away from the truth and embraced a lie and that choice took  them and their posterity into the bondage of sin.

What was the lie? You can defy God’s command and you will not die! (There will be no consequences for your actions.) Also, you will become like God. (They were already like God. They had been created in His Image! They were as good as they could be in mortal bodies with an eternal option.) And, you will gain knowledge of good and evil. (They knew good. What’s the benefit of knowing evil? Knowing evil means experiencing pain! Nothing good about that, which is why it’s called evil.) See Genesis 3:4.

The Biblical account is to the point. It states the facts without in depth explanations. It says the serpent conversed with the woman, Eve, and she responded. While Eve was being deceived by the lie, the beauty of the fruit, and her own desire for wisdom; Adam  remained a silent observer. We don’t know what Adam was thinking or why he didn’t warn Eve but Paul tells us that Adam was not deceived. Yet, he partook of the fruit which Eve had tasted and handed to him and then, simultaneously, their eyes were opened to their sinful state. And Paul says the first man, Adam, brought sin and death into the world and, I might add, the bondage from which we all need to be set free by the truth offered to us through Jesus Christ.

They died spiritually and lost communion with God. They developed mental defense mechanisms and emotional barriers to open communication. And thus, they lost the openness in their relationship with each other and it became difficult to be freely intimate. And we have struggled with our relationships ever since then.

I am saddened by the broken relationships today. Marriages, families, and friendships all suffer and become estranged because of lies and misunderstandings between individuals. Individuals suffer because they are out of relationship with God and; therefore, unable to maintain proper relationships with people.

If you are out of relationship with God and having problems with people, I urge you to respond to the invitation of Jesus today. He is calling you to come to Him so that “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”
