Meant to Endure

If my words are not too eloquent,
And my heart seems not too near,
It’s because I’m floundering right now–
Rethinking things I once thought clear.

What I thought was truth I now question.
What I thought was love has brought pain.
Friendship’s promises are failing me–
Tempting me to think they’re in vain.

Can eternal become ephemeral?
Can truth beget hurtful lies?
As rocks turn to quicksand beneath me,
I hear no response to my cries.

I know mortal man is unstable:
Fickle flesh makes much unsure.
But I continue my quest for answers,
Because friendship is meant to endure.
